Tsar Nicholas II is a character of the movie Anastasia.
Historical Background Edit
In order to heal his ailing son Alexei, Nicholas invited the monk Grigory Rasputin to the palace. The Romanov family took a liking to Rasputin.
Alexei was afflicted with the genetic disorder Haemophilia, where blood cannot clot. As a result, any injury resulting in bleeding is very difficult to stop. Rasputin healed Alexei by making him rest for a few days, and miraculously, Alexei was healed by the following morning.
A short time later, Alexei was wounded again, and Tsarina Alexandra wrote to Rasputin in desperation. Rasputin replied in a letter that he would pray for Alexei, and in a few days, Alexei was miraculously healed again.
Rasputin was assassinated when he was thought to be too influential over the already unpopular Tsarina and was also thought to be a threat to the Russian empire.
Nicholas later abdicated in response to his people's discontent, and was (along with his entire family) tricked into hiding, assassinated during the October Revolution led by the Bolsheviks, leading to the subsequent siege of power by Vladimir Lenin. It is widely thought that Anastasia too died with the other Romanovs, contrary to the story.
Background in Anastasia Edit
Nicholas II was the father of Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei. The last Tsar of Russia, the legacy of the Romanov family ended with his reign. Though he was a loving father and husband, he disliked politics and trusted too many important decisions to officials who abused their power. Consequently, his efforts intended to help the impoverished Russian population failed and people began to resent the wealth of the royal family.
Though he was a kind and caring man, but he was not a very good leader. It has been said that long before he was dethroned, the pressure of the growing unrest in Russia left him with a severe dislike of politics and politicians. Some felt he neglected the important responsibilities of his job in favour of spending time with his family.
The wizard Rasputin turned against the family, and Nicholas and his family were assassinated following the revolution that had been cursed upon them by Rasputin. Only Anastasia survives in the story.
